{Need.....color......suggestions!}
There are moments when I ask myself......what was I thinking??? And recently, I've been looking at my kitchen and thinking...TOO much orange!!! Did I really want my walls to match my cabinets?
And since hubby says that painting the cabinets are completely out-of-the question....(for now!).......it looks like I need to change my wall color......AGAIN.....
I say again, because this will be the 4th time in 6 years that I've painted our kitchen!! My son told me he is really worried that I am making our kitchen smaller with every coat of paint I put on....and he's being serious!
So....that's where I'm asking for suggestions from YOU!! What do you think? What color could I paint my kitchen?? Here's what I've already done....
puke colored yellow.......lasted about 1 year
boring drab tan.......lasted maybe 3
a little too bold "terra cotta" because that sounds better than anything in the orangy family....2 years
I'm thinking of a light green, but I remember someone telling me that you never do green in a kitchen...is that true???
I can't go blue because it would look really weird next to my living room......so you see my dilemma.....I'm out of colors!!
So please......HELP!!
What about red? It's supposed to be a good kitchen color...
ReplyDeletered is a good kitchen cupboard and really it depends on the green it can work good in a kitchen
ReplyDeleteLime green! I love bright green kitchens!
ReplyDeleteWhat color is the living room?
ReplyDeletei'm looking at the floor color and thinking a much lighter version/same hue might be a good choice.
ReplyDeleteMy kitchen is red with the color of cabinets you have. We love it. We do have a spacious kitchen though and it makes it feel homey. It is so important to find the right red, however. If it is too purple it looks funny. Too orange, same thing (been there, done that). Definitely do color samples.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to disagree with John...paint the cabinets white. We used a product called Cabinet Coat.
ReplyDeleteMy best friend has a red kitchen and loves it, but it took about five coats -- and that was with a primer and high-quality paint!
ReplyDeleteWhat color is your living room? I love blue + yellow kitchens, which is what mine is (well, sunny yellow + turquoise), and so to me it would be worth it to repaint the living room if that was holding back the kitchen color.
My sister painted her kitchen a bright & bold green and loves it. It's not really my thing, but her kitchen is open to the living & family rooms and so it looks good because she has chocolate brown in the other rooms and the windows are really big & provide plenty of light.
I have a piece of fish pottery from Mexico that has green, yellow, blue, and orange in it, and everything in my house is based on some shade that matches that. Maybe if you find a piece of art that has multiple colors you can coordinate the whole house? Okay, that sounds like a big undertaking...but I do love painting.
Good luck!
Im not much help because my kitchen is almost the same color, except the color is called "clay pot". In fact when I first looked at the picture I thought, why is there a picture of my kitchen on facebook?! Maybe instead of repainting you could put up a cool backsplash to break up the color? That is what I have, not the one I want, but what was in the house when we bought it.
ReplyDeleteI always say red, but I saw on Dr. Oz some time ago that it makes you hungry. If true, maybe not so good in a kitchen?? Your kitchen is nice and sunny so maybe a dark brown.
ReplyDeleteWhat about a neutral light gray? You can always accent gray with any colors @ the holidays, and I have been loving gray with brown lately too! My backsplash is a green beadboard which I LOVE ~ so green would be good too! It's a Behr paint color (I think it's called Mother Nature) ~ it's a very earthy green that looks good with the blues/browns in my living room too! I am so known to change paint colors often too ~ ask my husband!!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteI say gray too!
ReplyDeleteWOW!! Thanks! I can tell you though that lime or bright will never pass! :)
ReplyDeleteCan we see a picture of the living room and/or the area where the two rooms meet? And can you take a picture of the room at night as well?
ReplyDeleteMy first thought when I saw the pictures was lime green! So I think green is a great choice! =)
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure where you heard that a kitchen shouldn't be done in green. Have you seen Kirstie Alley's kitchen? It's gorgeous! What color makes you feel good? Those cabinets should go with just about anything, and your counter top is neutral, so I'd say that the sky is the limit. You could choose a color from a favorite piece of fabric that is somewhere in the living room if you want to tie things together.

Hi Nikki! My cabinets are about the same shade as yours (I think) and last fall I went with a pale green and hated it! It just blended in too much. I recently repainted with a much bolder green and I am so in love! It is just gorgeous and much more my style. But I like bright, funky colors!
ReplyDeleteMy kitchen walls have been lavender for about 8 years..the longest room in the house to not be repainted yet! The color is super mellow and if i could find curtains that i actually like (those i keep changing) then i would be happy! I know you hear "purple kitchen?!" but its a lot more calming than you would think. ;)
ReplyDeletepersonally i am partial to yellow kitchens....but i agree, yellow can be a hard one to pin down....don't want it too crazy or "puke-like" :) our kitchen and dining room are a nice buttery yellow that i love. i think a light color would make your cabinets stand out more - i think light green could look great!...i would love to see a picture of the rooms connecting to the kitchen!
ReplyDeleteps - if you want to see a crazy looking kitchen, i just posted about mine earlier today ;)
Your kitchen looks alot like mine. Cherry cabinets, even set up the same....so I will be watching what you do to yours first! Here is what is on my wish list...white bead board back splash and light airy curtains. My thought is that it will break up the color a bit (mine kitchen is khaki, accented with red and yes, I gained weight with red). Good luck and please post the color selection.
ReplyDeleteBaby Blue/ Teal
ReplyDeletegreen like the window valance, or a blue hue- or something in the turquoise family.
ReplyDeleteBehr Gray Morning is a nice color, accentuate the wood tone in the cabinet, and natural tone on floor, you could then use black or silver as accents...
try the greens because it goes with every wood and look. plenty of beautiful accents available too. Your kitchen is nice.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great blog... I can't even figure out how I came across you this evening, (I've been blog-hopping like crazy for the past hour or so!) but I am so glad I did! I painted my kitchen green about a year ago and I absolutely love it. I had a green kitchen in my last house, too. Whoever said "you don't do green in a kitchen" must be a boring person!! I like the wood cabinets, but you're right that the walls are too close to the same colour as them. Growing up we always had a blue kitchen, and my mom's kitchen always felt like a safe place to hang out, share, chat and sip tea, young and old alike - everyone loved being in my mom's kitchen! So there's another option, because there is nothing wrong with having another blue room in your house, you could even do a different depth of the same colour of blue as your living room... just not too dark of blue. Can't wait to see what you pick! You've posted that you are a pretty quick painter, so it shouldn't be a problem for ya!! And painting the walls would be a lot less stressful than doing a cabinet makeover! Happy painting!
