DIY Slipcovers. . . .

I recently embarked on a venture that I NEVER thought I would undertake.....slipcovers!

My sewing machine and I have had a rocky, sordid past....never getting a long very well....but recently, I discovered my problem!

I would be sewing for about 5 seconds and the thread would break.....the stitches wouldn't be even and I
was angry, frustrated, and confused......I kept following the manual diagrams for
adjusting thread tension and nothing seemed to work.....so I had a brain storm.

What if I started the thread tension at ZERO and worked my way up.....wouldn't you know.....it WORKED! The tension needed to be set between 0 and 1!

I will not even begin to tell you how to do the slipcovers....Miss Mustard Seed is the QUEEN of this
and I sat with my computer RIGHT NEXT TO the sewing machine....

I'd watch ( and re-watch!) the video tutorials and then embark on sewing it....Marian's
tutorials are so AMAZINGLY clear that even a spacially-challenged girl like me could follow them!

One of the best parts??  It's drop cloth, so if I made a mistake, I didn't
feel like I was ruining expensive fabric!

I am now working on my living room chairs!

  1. Great job! I have a wingback chair that I want to do as well and am scared. I have an even worse relationship with my sewing machine! ;)

  2. It turned out nice! Congrats! I just picked up 2 wing back chairs from Craigslist, and I am trying to figure out how I'm going to recover them. I don't sew! They do make this paint for upholstery, now.

So, I'm really thinking about painting just one of the chairs today to see how it works out! I couldn't stand a crunchy feel to fabric, so I'm expecting a lot from this paint! I'll have it posted by this Wednesday to see how it worked out if you want to take a look.

  5. They look great! You made me laugh with your story about thread that kept breaking. I had the same experience while sewing on Saturday. I tossed the spool in the trash out of frustration, but now I know it may have been my tension. Good to know!

  6. Those are gorgeous and you are so brave. I googled so many different tutorials about making slipcovers and ended up settling on finding a tutorial to clean my couches instead. This might make me reconsider because I was really wanting to redo them in grey or yellow. Great job on them!
